How does a septic tank work? After a village house's sewage flows into the septic tank, gravity separates it into three layers — scum on top, clearer water in the middle, sludge at the bottom. Anaerobic bacteria break it down, the clearer layer discharges to a soakaway, and the sludge keeps building at the bottom, which is why it must be pumped periodically. Once you understand the mechanism, you see why a septic tank isn't a "fit-and-forget" thing.

How does a septic tank work? What happens after sewage enters

Most village houses in the New Territories and outlying islands aren't connected to public sewers. Sewage from your toilet, kitchen and bathroom flows through the drains into a septic tank buried underground. Once it enters, it doesn't drain away immediately — it "pauses" and settles under gravity into layers:

  • Scum layer: lighter matter such as grease and paper floats on the surface.
  • Clear-water layer: the relatively clarified sewage in the middle.
  • Sludge layer: faeces and solid residue sink to the bottom.

During this holding time, anaerobic bacteria in the tank break down some of the organic matter, partially treating the sewage. The clearer middle layer then discharges into the surrounding soakaway (soak pit / leach field) and is filtered further through the soil. The whole process needs no power and no fuss — but on one condition: the sludge at the bottom must be pumped out regularly by someone.

How many chambers does a septic tank have? Breaking down the structure

Common septic tank designs in Hong Kong are divided into chambers, separated by baffles, so the sewage settles more thoroughly chamber by chamber:

  1. First chamber: sewage enters here first; the bulk of the solids and most of the sludge settle out.
  2. Second chamber: the clearer water from the previous chamber flows through and settles again, screening out remaining solids.
  3. Outflow / soakaway: only the relatively clear water is finally discharged to the soakaway.

The point of the chambers is to keep solids from rushing straight out — if there are no chambers, or a baffle fails, unsettled solids flow directly into the soakaway and clog it up, and repairing that becomes a major job. The actual number of chambers and the design vary from house to house; your building's original plans are the most reliable guide.

Why does a septic tank fill up? Why sludge must be pumped

Many owners ask: "If bacteria break it down, why does it still fill up?" The key is that bacteria only break down part of it — the remaining sludge and scum don't disappear on their own; they accumulate over time. The thicker the sludge layer, the smaller the tank's effective capacity, the less time sewage has to settle, and solids get pushed into the soakaway — eventually clogging the soak pit, or even backing up out of the lowest floor drain inside the house.

The EPD's guidance on village-house sewage discharge states that a septic tank must be inspected at least every 6 months, and the sludge removed once it exceeds 30cm. How is a septic tank different from public sewers?

Sewage from urban buildings connects directly to the government's public sewers — once it's flushed, someone else handles it, and owners barely notice. Village houses are different: the septic tank is your own house's standalone treatment system, and its operation, inspection and cleaning are all the owner's responsibility. This difference explains why village-house owners need to understand their septic tank while urban residents don't — ignore it, and no one else will deal with it for you.
